BETHEL, NY – As the days wind down in advance of this coming weekend’s Alliance Shippers’ LegendStock IX at Bethel Motor Speedway, we thought we’d take some time to see what some of the former guitar winners in the Young Lions and Semi Pro divisions are up to today.
2009 and 2010 – Dusty Summers – The only driver to win twice while in the Young Lions division can still be found in Legends competition, but now he is running in the Pro division, and taking in some road course action. Dusty is currently ranked 19th in Road Course Pro division points. So far in 2016, he has run some Winter Heat and Bojangles’ Summer Shootout races, and has also competed at Dominion Raceway.
2011 – Matt Pappa – Matt is the only driver to have brought home a LegendStock guitar in two different divisions – he went on to pick up the Pro division and overall LegendStock race win in 2012, on the day of his 15th birthday. The 2011 track champion at both Bethel Motor Speedway and Albany-Saratoga Speedway picked up the Chemung track championship in 2012, and capped off that season by winning the Pro national championship. From 2013 through 2015, Matt could be found behind the wheel of a dirt Sportsman car, as part of Brett Hearn’s racing team. Among the tracks where Matt recorded victories in the Sportsman car are Lebanon Valley Speedway and Albany-Saratoga Speedway. He raced at numerous different tracks, including Utica Rome Speedway and Orange County Fair Speedway. Matt is currently in college, studying cinematography.
2012 – David Schilling – Most recently, David has been making the rounds in a dirt Sportsman car as well. In 2015, he picked up accolades as the New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Rookie of the year for Albany-Saratoga Speedway. He kicked off the 2016 season by finishing second to Brett Hearn at the Hard Clay Open at Orange County Fair Speedway. In June, he picked up his first Sportsman win at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Other tracks he has visited so far this season include Utica Rome Speedway, Weedsport Speedway, Lebanon Valley Speedway, and Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
2013 – William Byron – NASCAR race fans have undoubtedly heard William’s name, as he has made quite the name for himself already this season, which is his rookie year competing in the Camping World Truck Series. Piloting the #9 Liberty University Toyota Tundra for Kyle Busch Motorsports, this past weekend he broke the record for number of wins in a rookie season in the series when he picked up his fifth win of the year at Pocono Raceway. William currently sits atop the CWTS point standings.
2014 – Stevie Johns – Stevie is presently still involved in Legends racing, competing in the Pro division. He picked up the Pro division win during Round 7 of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout, and currently sits 11th in national Pro division points. In addition to running Winter Heat and Bojangles’ Summer Shootout races, Stevie has competed at both Concord Speedway and Anderson Motor Speedway so far in 2016.
2015 – Teddy Hodgdon – In addition to being the youngest overall winner of LegendStock when he picked up the division win at LegendStock 2015, Teddy also made history as the first driver outside of the Pro division to come out on top at the prestigious event. Having moved up to the Semi Pro division for 2016, Teddy currently sits 6th in national points in the division, with six Semi Pro division wins to his credit. Teddy started his season off at Winter Nationals at Orlando Speedworld, and has since made stops at Bethel Motor Speedway, Stafford Speedway, Seekonk Speedway, Chemung Speedrome, and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.
2008 – Mike Alcaro – After his division win in the inaugural LegendStock event, Mike went on to collect the Bethel Legends championship in 2010, and is the winningest Legends driver since the track reopened under new ownership. While in the Pro division, Mike finished 6th in national Pro points in 2013, and 8th in 2014. He was the NJ state Pro champion in both of those years. He has been racing a limited schedule since, and has only raced twice so far in 2016, picking up a feature win at Wall Stadium and a Pro division win at Bethel.
2009 – Roger Coss – The 2009 NJ state Semi Pro champion has since moved into asphalt Modifieds, where he has recorded success as well. He began racing Modifieds in 2010, and has raced at such tracks as Wall Staidum and Mahoning Valley Speedway, and has competed in Race of Champions (RoC) Tour events. In 2015, he was the winner of the “Octoberfast” event at Mahoning Valley Speedway, collecting $6,000 for his efforts. According to his offseason press releases, Roger’s plans for this year included a limited schedule at Mahoning Valley Speedway and a partial RoC schedule, as well as taking part in the Tri-Track Open Modified Series.
2010 – Kevin Nowak – Kevin can still be found in competition in Legends cars, and doing a bit of traveling. He now competes in the Pro division, and has recorded seven Pro division wins already this season, having raced at such tracks as Riverhead Raceway, Wall Stadium, Evergreen Raceway Park, and New London-Waterford Speedbowl. He currently sits third in season points at Wall Satdium, and fifth at Riverhead Raceway. He is ranked 11th in national Pro division points, and leads the standings in NY state.
2011 – Corey Gordon – Corey is also still competing in Legends cars, and has moved up to the Pro division as well. He has been doing some road course racing, and is currently ranked 21st in Pro national Road Course points. So far in 2016, Corey picked up two Pro division wins during the Winter Heat series, and he also racked up a Pro division win at Dominion Raceway. He has participated in the Fastrak Touring Series on dirt, where he picked up a win during Labor Day weekend in 2015.
2012 – Ryan Mackintosh – Ryan, originally from Canada, went on to pick up the Semi Pro national championship in Legends cars in 2013. After nearly two years away from Legends racing, Ryan made one start at the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout this season.
2013 – Austin Berry – In 2013, Austin collected ten feature event wins at Bethel Motor Speedway, and he finished the season third in the track’s YL/SP point standings, while picking up the 2013 PA state SP championship. He has since moved into dirt Late Models, and has competed at such tracks as Selinsgrove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway in 2016.
2014 – Devin O’Connell – Devin may have brought home a guitar in 2014, but 2015 was his breakthrough year in Legends competition. At the INEX awards banquet, he picked up the SP Asphalt, Road Course, and zMax Touring Series titles, as well as the coveted Madonna Award. He is still doing some limited Legends racing in the Pro class in 2016, and currently sits fifth in Pro Road Course national points, having competed at the Winter Heat Series, Thompson Motorsports Park, and New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He is also competing for Rookie of the Year honors on the ACT Tour for Hallstrom Motorsports.
2015 – Joseph Graf – Joseph has had plenty of success in Legends cars, capturing the 2014 Bethel Legends YL/SP title, and following it up with the 2015 Pro/Masters/SP title in 2015. He is presently ranked 16th in Pro national points, and leads in NJ state points. With two overall feature wins at Bethel Motor Speedway so far this season, he is fourth in the standings at the track. In addition to competing in Legends, he is also in the hunt for Rookie of the Year in the SK Lite class at Stafford Motor Speedway, where he has already collected one win, four top five finishes, and eight top ten finishes in ten starts.
